FIFTY YEARS IN THE WILDERNESS

Description

In 1976, Mike Coles arrived in a punk-smitten London from
a hippy squat in Amsterdam with £90, a rucksack, and a little book of drawings. Three years later he started Malicious Damage Records with his new-found mates and an unknown band called Killing Joke. His logic was that if you have your own record label, you’ll be able to design all the record sleeves, posters, and t-shirts, and maintain what he fondly refers to as stubborn independence.
This book, illustrates that erratic journey on the fringes of the design, music, and art worlds, aka the “wilderness”. From early pen-and-ink drawings in the seventies; earning a living doing paste-up in advertising agencies; designing record sleeves with photocopies; the arrival of the computer; my discovery of the Church of Bleeding Gums; to projecting his video creations at the Royal Albert Hall for Killing Joke in 2023.
